Ahn Sang Soo

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

We had the distinct pleasure of meeting artist/designer Ahn Sang Soo the other night. Despite having to leave the next day on a 3 month trip to Europe for exhibitions and lectures, he graciously took time out of his busy schedule to sit down and chat with us. Located near Hongik University, where he teaches, his academic workspace was filled with a grip of books and artwork (we all wish we had some more time just to look through all the cool stuff lining the shelves and walls – peep the 2 photos I snapped on my iPhone above….)

I’ve become fascinated with the Korean Alphabet (which is a truly innovative alphabet system) since I’ve moved here. And I’ve become a fan of Ahn Sang Soo’s work with Korean typography, so getting to meet him was huge. So special thanks to our friend Maia at Chillzine for the introduction!

July weekend pt 3. (Seoul Culture)

Here are the rest of the photos from the screening at Hongdae Sangsang-Madang. Stay tuned for pt. 4 with pics from an event at the Rivers Crew Studio from that same day.

July weekend pt.2 (Seoul Culture)

Monday, July 26th, 2010

While people rocked out at the Pentaport Music Festival, I decided to stay behind and catch the premiere of the short but sweet video Seoul Footage Montage 1.1 & 1.2. This was a special treat for me – being able to see something different and really still unknown to the rest of world (and I love LCD Soundsystem, but I’m from NYC so I’ve gotta check out something my friends haven’t seen yet.)

Presented by Dokku (Meal1) and shot/edited by Phil Song, the video is a fun peek into the skate sub-culture here in Seoul. A lot of love goes out to the younger brothers who are skating here (and you’ll catch in the video): Dong-Chul (Cartel), Seung Wook Jee (Pr1zm), Jung Yul Cha (Pr1zm) & Kwang Hoon Cho (C1rca).

Young Seoul based artist/illustrator Sohyun Lim checking her email at a cafe in Hongdae. The great thing about Seoul is that there’s wifi everywhere; which makes chillen or going from event to event easier when you can look up something on a map or check email on the go.

Jay came through again this year, courtesy of R-16 Korea, and is taking some time to work on his own photos. We’ll post some of his new work in Korea in the near future.

In the meantime, check out a recent interview on youtube and some other work pulled from his blog.

NYC Highlights (COOPER HEWITT pt 2)

Monday, December 28th, 2009

“Ten leading designers have been commissioned to develop new uses for sustainably grown and harvested materials in order to tell a unique story about the life-cycle of materials and the power of conservation and design.

The featured designers and places include Yves Behar/Costa Rica; Stephen Burks/Australia; Hella Jongerius/Mexico; Maya Lin/Maine; Christien Meindertsma/Idaho; Isaac Mizrahi/Alaska; Abbott Miller/Bolivia; Ted Muehling/Micronesia; Kate Spade/Bolivia; and Ezri Tarazi/China.”

In the gallery below are both press photos and photos I took on my trip to the museum (DESIGN FOR A LIVING WORLD on view until Jan 4, 2010):

“Our goal with the exhibition is to connect audiences to the natural world by exploring the story of place through innovative design,” said Mark Tercek, president and chief executive of The Nature Conservancy. “‘Design for a Living World’ challenges us to think about the products we use—where they come from, how they are made and what the impacts are on our planet and on local communities.”

Here’s a video of Maya Lin talking about her project:

“Design for a Living World” is co-curated by Abbot Miller, a partner at PENTAGRAM. Check out the post about the exhibition at the Pentagram blog <here>.

I finally got to visit the Cooper Hewitt – which has two ongoing ambitious exhibitions.

On the first floor, you’ll find Design USA: Contemporary Innovation (October 16, 2009–April 4, 2010).

“Design USA celebrates the accomplishments of the winners honored during the first ten years of the prestigious National Design Awards. The exhibition features outstanding contemporary achievements in American architecture, landscape design, interior design, product design, communication design, corporate design, interaction design, and fashion. Design USA focuses on innovation through the lens of technology, material, method, craft and transformation.”
