One of the three artificial islets from the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s “Floating Island” project is set afloat on the Han River near the Dongjak Bridge on Saturday.

The Seoul metropolitan government put in place the basic structure for the FIRST of THREE artificial floating islands on the river this Saturday.

“There are artificial islands in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, but they’re in addition to the actual natural islands in the area. Seoul’s Floating Islands are remarkable because they are completely man-made ones that will float on the river,” explained Kim Hyeong-keon, a city official involved in the project, according to JoongAng. “That’s why we’re not calling them artificial islands, we’re calling it the Floating Island.

“There already are artificial floating islands overseas similar to what Seoul is building now: Floating Garden in Rostock, Germany, and Mur Island [The Murinsel] in Graz, Austria. While the two artificial islands are relatively small and the purposes of the venues are limited, Seoul’s Floating island is big enough to serve multiple purposes.”

Those multiple purposes include international conventions, water sports activities, restaurants, performance, exhibitions and various cultural events.

I’m not hating on the bright colored fashion+party vibe orientation of Jerkin’ music, but I just can’t jump on the “hip hop is dead” bandwagon yet either. (It’s not dead, just fragmenting a lot quicker than we can keep up with.)

Here’s a sampling of some new hip hop talent that’s been on rotation in my ‘favorite’s playlist’ lately.

Chiddy Bang. Consistently been fresh. Keep your eye out for their producer, Xaphoon Jones.

Kidz in the Hall. I’ll admit, I only picked up on them off their single “Wheelz Fall Off” because they re-used the classic sample from Souls of Mischief’s ‘93 til Infinity, but it was a great re-sample and they’re still growing on me (disclaimer, they’ll be playing a SxSW showcase produced by our friends – check out the line-up here!)

Wiz Khalifa. Really went big on the mixtapes for the internet. I’m curious what’s next.

Theophilus London. I’m still going back to his mixtape for listens! Can’t wait to see what he’s got in store next.

Kid Cudi. Seems smart, knows the game, and I feel his lyrics. We’ll see him active in the usual arenas (fashion, acting), but it’s little things like collabing on a house track above that’ll continue to keep him fresh in our minds.
